Twenty years of sustainable investing with the Kempen Sustainable European Small-cap strategy

26 October 2022

Twenty years ago Kempen launched Europe’s first sustainable small-cap strategy, and in that time the portfolio has successfully generated a cumulative return of 481%, net of fees, for its clients*.

Michiel van Dijk, Portfolio Manager of the Kempen Sustainable European Small-cap strategy explains: ‘After twenty years, the investment philosophy of the sustainable European Small-cap strategy is still rock solid. Sustainable investing, engaged shareholdership and creating long-term value for our clients in a fundamental manner have constituted our investment view from the very start. Our team consists of passionate fund managers with a huge drive to realise a solid performance. Our sustainable investment philosophy has been awarded with five Morningstar sustainability globes and the Belgian Febelfin Towards Sustainability Label.’

The team consists of Michiel van Dijk, Erwin Dut, Sander van Oort, Hanna Waltsgott and Ingmar Schaefer. Together their philosophy is to select high-quality companies at an attractive valuation. As engaged shareholders, the team maintains close communication with the companies that are represented in its portfolio, engaging about issues such as sustainability and strategic improvements.

Kempen (Lux) Sustainable European Small-cap Fund offers investors the opportunity to invest in an actively and professionally managed portfolio of shares in small European listed companies, whilst also complying with strict exclusion and sustainability criteria. Since the strategy’s launch in 2002, the team has achieved a net annualised return of 9.2% per year (vs. 8.4% for the index)*.

Kempen has been a specialist in small-cap investing for over 30 years. In 1991 Kempen introduced its first small-cap fund, the Kempen Orange Fund, investing into  Dutch small-caps. Since then, Kempen has expanded its range of small-cap investment funds to include European and Global small-cap funds.
