Clara-Pensions appoints Kempen Capital Management as fiduciary manager

09 June 2021

With this appointment Clara has all key service providers in place to provide a comprehensive consolidation solution to the UK DB market. For Kempen, this appointment represents a significant milestone in its continued growth of the UK business. Today’s announcement demonstrates the importance of strong governance and joined-up investment implementation in delivering the benefits of Clara’s model.

Clara will focus on securing the full pension promise for each individual member and acts as a bridge for members and sponsors to the insured market. Both teams are fully aligned around a single objective – delivering the most secure pension promise as early as possible.

Adam Saron, CEO of Clara-Pensions, said: “A consolidator’s covenant is a combination of its capital and its investment strategy. Kempen’s scale and expertise will support our investment decision making but also provide additional governance and independence in investment implementation. Members can be confident in the strength and consistency of Clara’s covenant.

“The robust and challenging selection process, which was led by our Trustee, saw impressive pitches from a number of providers. Kempen clearly demonstrated their understanding of what Clara is seeking to achieve and how they could support us.

“We were particularly impressed by Kempen’s ESG credentials and their experience of Dutch consolidation will also be particularly valuable.

“Our investment approach is there to deliver Clara’s bridge to buy-out model. Bringing Kempen on board will help us deliver safer pensions for members, trustees and sponsors.”

Andre Keijsers, Manager Director UK, and Nicholas Clapp, Head of Business Development, Fiduciary Management UK of Kempen, commented: “We are proud that Clara-Pensions has selected Kempen to act as their fiduciary manager after an extensive selection process. It’s a partnership with a firm focus on the future, bolstering our position as one of the leading fiduciary managers in the UK market. It demonstrates that our fully customised fiduciary management with unremitting client focus resonates in the UK market.

“From day one, we have been impressed with what Clara are trying to achieve and the member first approach resonated with our approach and culture.

“We have been impressed by the length and depth of the due diligence process of Clara-Pensions, in fact the most demanding and detailed we have been through. This process showed that they truly wanted a partner which could deliver the rigorous requirements of Clara. We consider this a true partnership, that will leverage our extensive experience in pension consolidation.”

About Clara-Pensions
Clara-Pensions is the member-first consolidator for defined benefit pension schemes. It acts as a bridge for pension scheme members, from the company that currently supports their pension to a long-term insured future.

Clara provides a safer pension promise today by combining its own capital and robust governance with additional contributions from sponsors, who can now transfer the burden of their pension liabilities to Clara. This frees up companies to focus on their future growth.

Clara will provide a low-risk journey to an insured buyout, giving members the security of a fully insured pension earlier. Only once all members have their full benefits secured will Clara provide a long-term return on capital for investors.
