Kempen European Private Equity Fund acquires a significant interest in APEM Ltd.
The deal is a co-investment with WestBridge Capital, Kempen’s private equity investment partner in the United Kingdom. The buyout deal will support APEM’s growth ambitions as it develops complementary service lines to support its clients’ needs. Dr Adrian Williams and Dr Stuart Clough, who have been instrumental in growing the business over the past decade, will continue to take the company forward. They are supported by a broad and experienced executive team, who will benefit from the wider share ownership that this transaction has allowed.
Marvin de Jong, Director Private Markets at Kempen: ‘We are delighted to have been able to back this highly experienced management team. In our view, the demand for environmental consultancy is set to grow: the UK government is committed to delivering its 25-year environment plan, which includes the delivery of clean and plentiful water. We also note that the UK must comply with EU environmental regulations, even after Brexit. We believe that the impact on the business of a potential hard Brexit will therefore be relatively limited.’
Sven Smeets, Co-Head of Private Markets adds: ‘As the offshore wind industry affects wildlife behavior - above and under water - most countries have enforced strict regulation. As the leading provider of digital aerial bird surveys, APEM has carried out well over 1,500 surveys and worked on seven of the nine Round Three offshore wind zones in the UK, as well as wind farm areas in the German North Sea and German Baltic Sea. APEM already has a strong foothold in the United States, having won four major offshore wildlife photography survey contracts in the last couple of years. Together with our partner WestBridge Capital, we are looking forward to support and help drive further growth in the business in the years to come.’
Guy Davies, managing partner at WestBridge Capital, said: ‘We regard the Kempen Private Markets team as a partner in an alliance that offers room for professional, entrepreneurial development and investing. That’s why we are delighted that they are co-investing with us with regards to APEM. We look forward to working with them on other transactions in the future.’
