Client case:

Kempen is dedicated to delivering bespoke solutions at maximum cost efficiency. In order to continue to succeed in doing so, we are always looking for innovations, such as new investment markets, investment products, initiatives, and partnerships. A case in point in this respect is the transition towards a more sustainable investment portfolio of the industry pension fund for the Butchers. Until 2012, this fund applied the Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) policy of the then asset manager. ‘When we started to look for a new asset manager, we wanted to find a partner who would be able to support us in the field of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) factors,’ according to board member Frans van de Veen. ‘We decided on Kempen. Initially, we adopted their ESG policy. After a meeting with Kempen, however, we realized that we wanted to develop our own ESG policy.’

Over the next few years, the pension fund worked together with Kempen to develop their own ESG policy. Frans stated: ‘We wanted our investments to contribute to the community and global society. Together with Kempen, we looked at every individual asset class and explored ways to make progress in the field of ESG in each class. In impact investing, for example, we consciously decided in favour of the themes of nutrition, labour, the climate, and water.’

The new SRI policy was implemented in the final quarter of 2017. By the middle of 2018, the pension fund won the Pensioen Pro ESG award for its integrated and innovative approach. ‘For years, we have been building assets that deliver sufficient returns for good pension benefits, now and in the future,’ as Frans replied. ‘Today, we want to do more; we want these assets to contribute to society and the world. Winning this award confirms our trust that we have made the right choice.’
